When a dog has a name like Capone, you expect a certain mental toughness from him. Although this dog who was once found roaming the side of a busy interstate highway in Des Moines, Iowa was small, he had more than enough courage to go around on the day when it counted the most.
Part whippet, chihuahua and miniature pinscher, Capone is a dog that is normally quiet and relatively calm.
However, all of that changed one day when inside the house with one of his people, Angela Fullmer. On this particular day, he simply would not stop baking, no matter how many times she told him to be quiet.
Even though this behavior was unusual for the dog, it didn’t occur to Angela that there was a specific problem right away. This mother of nine children was distracted by the fact that she had just given birth to a newborn and finished college with a bachelor’s degree at roughly the same time.
She was also home alone with the kids while her husband worked. There’s no doubt that she had her hands full and then some. As such, it’s understandable that when Capone first started barking, she felt more annoyed than alarmed.
She repeatedly told him to stop barking and sit down, but he would have nothing of the sort. Not only did he continue to bark, he eventually began wandering frantically back and forth between the living room and the kitchen, almost as if he were trying to lead Angela into the kitchen in order to see something.
After this went on for several minutes, she finally decided that the only way to silence the dog was to go with him. She couldn’t imagine what was so important that he had to bark incessantly.
The truth is, she never could have prepared herself for what she saw when she walked into the kitchen. The reason Capone had been barking was because a short had occurred in the microwave oven and caused the plug that went into the wall to start smoldering.
Not only could Capone hear the sizzling sound the plug was making, he could smell the smoke and the burning plastic. By the time he got Angela’s attention, the plug was fully ablaze.
Angela’s attention immediately turned to her children. She didn’t waste time trying to put out the fire. Instead, she started gathering everyone together and telling them to get out of the house and stay out.
She had enough forethought to grab the keys to the family van and in just a matter of seconds, Angela was leading all of her children and Capone out of the house. They all got into the van and she counted off one more time to make sure that everyone was indeed accounted for, which they were.
It was then that she called 911. Once the van was safely away from the house, they waited for the fire department to arrive. Unfortunately, the firefighters would not be able to save their home that day but the thing that was most important was already taken care of. Angela, the kids and Capone were all safe and sound.
If it hadn’t been for the fact that Capone simply wouldn’t take no for an answer, if he hadn’t been so persistent in his quest to get Angela’s attention, things might have ended far differently.
The fire spread so quickly that it might not have been possible to get everyone out of the house if it hadn’t been for Capone. To this day, that’s something that Angela and the entire family remember. Thankfully, they all have a new home now, complete with a nice fenced-in yard where Capone can run and play.
